The secrets of the dead are in her hands. The bones of three young women are unearthed in the basement of a Montreal pizza parlor, and forensic anthropologist Tempe Brennan has unsolved murder on her mind as she examines the shallowly buried remains. Coming up against a homicide cop who is convinced the dead have been entombed on the site for centuries, Tempe perseveres, even with her own relationship with Detective Andrew Ryan at a delicate turning point.
In the lab, the clean, well-perserved bones offer few clues. But when Carbon 14 confirms her hunch that these were recent deaths despite the antique buttons found near the bodies, Tempe's probing must produce answers quickly to stop a killer whose grisly handiwork has seen the light of day. Reichs is one of very few forensic anthropologists certified by the American Board of Forensic Anthropology.

Tempe Brennan has come to Montreal from Charlotte in early December to testify as an expert witness at a trial. As Forensic Anthropologist for the province of Quebec, that's part of her job. She should be going over her notes, but she's freezing her behind off instead, digging in the basement of a pizza parlour. Not fun. Not with all the rats. And the cold.
With very little to go on she turns to Carbon dating to age the skeletons and discovers they are in fact quite recent deaths. Meanwhile her relationship with Detective Ryan is becoming more complicated, with him being quite evasive and with rumours abound that he was seen with a much younger woman. The cases appear to be linked and seem to tie in to a man called Stephen Menard, who had once rented the property that is now a pizza parlour, but when they obtain fingerprints from the man they think is Menard it turns out he is not. What has happened to the real Menard and how is he or the imposter connected to the girls found in the basement? How does this case link to previous cases of girls being kept as sex slaves? The whole story with the skeletons in the basement intrigued me right from the start. I was desperate to find out if the skeletons were going to turn out to be old or recent, although I was fairly sure they would be recent or the whole story would be a little redundant.
