Captain Beebe was unashamedly opinionated about what he found worked well and what didn't work as well. He was specific. The current editor seems overly concerned about stepping on toes.

Stop it! I want to know what you, the author, thinks. I'm not at all concerned about whose feelings you hurt. For example, the 4th edition is full of gems like, and I quote, "Search reports from cruisers to find the most reliable and trouble-free autopilot.

Word of mouth is the best source. I can only guess why the author would write this way. If you want to do any blue water long distance power boat cruising this is a must read.

It would also be highly recommended for anyone contemplating purchasing a power boat to understand the design aspects of sea worthiness. I suspect that sailing boat enthusiasts would also benefit as the author began with sail boats. The focus of this book is nearly exclusively on what it takes to cruise across oceans or around the world in 30' to 60' power boats. For a more practical and rounded discussion of the same subjects, I would also highly recommend the Powerboat Bible by Stapleton which while written in covers the full range of cruising environments and is still adequately up to date to be a good guide regarding the tradeoffs of various hull designs, layouts, propulsion choices, etc.

Both are old enough that they are not the best references for the most up to date stabilization systems or electronics but they do cover the fundamentals well so that in shopping for them a buyer would benefit from the description of the the design and operating principals described in these books.

I have always thought sailboats were the way to see those beautiful places accessible only by water, the South Pacific, Great Lakes, and Scandinavia. However, after reading this book I can see advantages of power only.

For one, the sailor is standing watch out in the weather watching and adjusting the sails through wind, rain and sun. Sometimes when the wind dies, an auxiliary engine will take the place of sail. What Voyaging Under Power does is focus on a type of boat that uses only an engine for propulsion with no concern for finding the trade winds, where more of the boat can be designed for passenger accommodation, and better shelter for the crew, where constant cruising speed means more time spent at the destination socializing with natives and other boating enthusiasts.

The sailboat is designed to catch the wind and some of the form of this boat is dedicated to this purpose, the ocean going trawler is all engine. However, may boats that are sold are not designed for sea worthiness and long distance, although the salesman says one thing, a look at the boat as a naval architect would shows deficiencies that keeps a so called trawler as only a coastal cruiser.

There are simple formulas and rules of thumb that tell the prospective buyer what to look for. How likely is a boat to capsize and sink in a storm? How much fuel does it take to move a given hull shape through the water. The write up on stability is about the best. Many modern sailboats and modern recreational trawlers will also sacrifice stability to style and accommodation. The book starts with determining what you want, interior layout, engines, filtration for water in diesel, shape of hull, stabilization, etc.

Beyond boat selection and purchase, topics covered are crossing oceans, route selection, standing watch, ships log, fuel management, emergencies, prop fouling, arrivals at night, strange harbors, crossing the boisterous bar at a harbor with the wind one direction and tide the other, seasickness, cruising destinations, foreign repairs, spare parts, round the world planning, health, expenses, navigation and mechanical check lists.

There are 83 pages describing the various ocean-going trawlers available, which is also interesting for seeing the differences. A trawler has more systems and if you want to know how it all works, get this book. I have read the previous editions and have used them as the bible for offshore powerboat design. This latest update, done with the Beebe estate's full approval, is by far the best yet.

Denis has tremendous experience offshore, and has updated everything and included many modern designs and a better yet, a very open handed way of explaining all the alternative ways to do things and lets the reader decide what is best for him.

It is a remarkable, information loaded book, and I could not recommend it more highly. Down in the bilge detailed at least about Trawler design considerations, and on that it delves into the math of things.

Voyaging Under Power

Voyaging Under Power. Robert P. Beebe , James F. At that time world cruisers voyaged exclusively in sailboats. But sailboats are confined to narrow lanes of predominantly favorable winds - the same sea lanes sailors have used for centuries. Those famous tradewinds also turn most oceans into one-way streets, and miss some areas of the globe entirely.

Voyaging Under Power, 4th Ed.

Are you guys sinking? Nearly all marine engines are designed to be adjustable, to a point, relative to the propeller shaft by using adjustment or jacking nuts on their motor mounts. Most of the more experienced power voyagers I work with have a system and a plan to look after just about every aspect involved in the management of their boats. When you have a mess to clean up, sometimes the best solution is to take matters into your own hands and suck it up. Story and photos by John Kettlewell. Edit Module Advertisement.
