He is considered an avant-garde poet and an influential figure in the poetry scene of his country. His family was middle class farmers from a rural area and de Rokha's father did various jobs to earn a living, such as a farm manager and a chief customs officer in the Andes border crossings. Pablo de Rokha was a ball of fire. This book, one of his earliest poetry collections and my first encounter with his works, is almost a statement of the man he is, his big declaration as a writer.
He writes about everything, covering all aspects of his life to create a sort of encyclopedia of his poetic vision. His prose poetry deals with himself, his family, his origins, as most poets, but also with the world around him: capitalism, city life, war, communism, life and death.
It is all a huge co Pablo de Rokha was a ball of fire. It is all a huge compendium of thoughts, almost daunting to approach. Above all, the important thing is not the topics he covers, but how he does so. His prose is fire. He writes about the things he hates, passionately, the things he loves, in spite of himself.
He hates with an overwhelming passion. One can feel his words burning through the pages. The best example of this is his long poem "Yanquilandia", a fierce attack on USA politics and lifestyle. The way in which he aims his hatred is oustanding. But then he also finds space to talk about what he loves: Whitman and boxing. De Rokha writes as a man consumed by his ability to feel deeply. My personal favourite here is his long poem "Epitalamio", a love declaration to his wife and the life they live together.
He witnesses this love and its doomed end with an iron eye, aware of the burden this is, but also enduring the burden with quiet strength. This is exactly how the poetry of Pablo de Rokha is: as fire, in its passion, as steel, in its endurance.
