DONNA HARAWAY MODEST WITNESS PDF

Donna J. Haraway, with paintings by Lynn M. I am writing this review a couple of weeks after the death of Dr. Benjamin Spock. Listening to some of the news reports about him after reading Haraway's book, I am acutely aware of the contradictions that permeate the public accounts of this man's life. Perhaps by the time you read this, I won't be the only one who has commented on how singularly this man's most notable work is an icon of the male-centered scientific way of life.

Ask yourself these questions: Is child-rearing more precise, perfect, and predictable after Dr. Is child-rearing more legitimate now that the scientific world has acknowledged its existence, attempted to quantify it and endow it with scientific principles?

Is motherhood elevated now that it has been sanctioned by a man of science? If not, then why is the man celebrated in the popular press for his contribution to society, as though he alone, as the first man of science to document this discipline, invented child care?

If, after reading the preceding paragraph, you find yourself asking what all this has to do with technical communication, Haraway's book is probably not for you.

This book is more for the person, technical communicator or not, comfortable with open-ended questions, prepared to come to terms with complex arguments around the subjective nature of "truth" and ready to invest some time considering where the boundary lies between what we call "science" and "nature" and "culture. Haraway is crazy like a fox. I'm never sure how much of her writing I should take seriously and how much she just throws out there to wake people's brains up. Regardless, she has some great ideas and some incredibly stupid ones, but her writing is never mediocre. An influential historian of science and cultural studies theorist, Haraway attended Colorado College and then Yale University, where she received a Ph.

Modest Witness Second Millennium. Femaleman Meets Oncomouse: Feminism and Technoscience

By Gail Vines. Love her or loathe her, you ignore her at your peril. Professor of the history of consciousness at the University of California, Santa Cruz, Haraway is a developmental biologist, a historian of science, a cultural studies scholar, a feminist. Yet none of these labels comes close to describing what she does. Her writing is a kind of intellectual anti-conjuring trick. These are dangerous waters. Haraway chips away at the Wall, drills through it, burrows under it, abseils down it.
